How To Collaborate
We will explore, learn, and communicate the best practices of collaboration.
Initially, we will focus on the questions and problems our users face related to how, with limited resources, they can affectively collaborate with others to develop their original projects.

HOW?
I've found that even very smart, experienced business people have difficulty figuring out the appropriate structures for collaboration and partnerships on new ideas. Of course, its easier when you have lots of money, or even a decent amount of money, to structure a "collaboration"... You do the work, I pay you money. But what about when the work you need completed "costs" more than the money you have available to you? That's just one resource problem. What happens if you get over that obstacle with arrangements like an IOU, deferred payment, equity incentive, or royalty but you have to figure in other obstacles like "What if you say you're going to do it, but you don't end up doing it?, or "What if you do 'it', but 'it' is not what I wanted?" Clearly, there are proven methods of factoring in all the different types of variables that may come into play in a collaboration. There are a lot of experienced people with solid structures and contracts on how to execute. And there are a variety of different ways a collaboration can be structured. My goal with this project is to address these structural and other collaboration issues and ideally make it easier for people to understand, and implement, effective ways of collaborating. Sometimes they'll work, sometimes they won't. What will work for some, won't work for others. But, hopefully the information will help some people get over this initial hump in structuring a collaboration and moving forward to develop their original project. And of course, let me point out that I'm not a lawyer (nor a doctor), nor do I claim to be an expert on this subject. But I do plan to bring some lawyers into the mix on this original project, as well as anyone who has experience, knowledge and expertise to share. And of course, common sense!

Garot Conklin: Some further questions I asked myself were... When is the right time to formally request NDA's to go further? If my initial network of contacts does not fulfill my requirement, where do I start looking for resources likely to be interested in involvement? What other options are there in terms of initial compensation aside from stake in the company? Where can I get research on typical development costs, industry specific trending, sales projections, etc...? Is there a "best time" to put up the web presence, become a legal corporation? Which state taxation laws benefit me most? Wow .. I guess the list can just go on and on...

Garot Conklin: In addition to the current project I have posted right here on OP, I am currently involved in a start-up LLC in which large sums of investment capitol are required. Initially I started by reaching out to friends, not for $$$, but for attributes that they can bring to the table at the co-founder stage of the game that I felt to be viable and most importantly, aspects which I do not myself possess. Some of the difficulties I have encountered, questions I have had to ask myself are as follows: How do I determine compensation for someone without any direct monetary exchange? How do I determine their actual worth on a 3-5 year plan from day 1? Specifically based on forecasted and mostly fictitious projections additionally based on the limitations of allotted shares? How does the average person relate to compensation from stock in lieu of a static paycheck? Moreover can someone unfamiliar with this model survive this mindset? How to differentiate the role based on time committed vs.the role as a co-founder vs. employee of the company, which may or may not ever come to fruition?
