Companion Kit for Toddlers [With Leukemia]
Ingrid Tung: Must include blood cell stuffed animals! http://www.giantmicrobes.com/us/main/corporeals/
January 25, 2010 @ 05:58 PM EST
This is a kit that will include toys, books, ideas and resources for toddlers with leukemia and their families.
Most of the resources, techniques and books for helping children with leukemia are for children ages 3 and older. Toddlers, with their growing language comprehension, limited vocabulary and in their particular stage of development, need special resources.
For example, toddlers need to name things and can often do so first in sign. This kit will help toddlers learn the names and parts of their treatment experience with flash cards, signs, pictures and puppets. The kit will have examples of words and phrases to use and routines that will help make treatment easier, including ways to give toddlers and siblings more control over the process.
Kit will include resources for siblings and parents, too.
Chemo or the Kid?
This is the question. Any new mom knows that the first couple of years is filled with questions around the themes: Eating, pooping, sleeping, tantrums, milestones, and generally, "Is this normal?" I thought I would have it down this time around, but when chemo is added into the mix, it is hard to tell whether a particular behavior is just the kid or the chemo. Maybe I'll address this here. In fact, maybe the "kit" could start out here. Just as resources, suggestions, etc., then become something that can be distributed and/or sold.

Nathan Wieler: ingrid - can you point out some of the problems with materials that are available right now for toddlers with Leukemia (which I know is basically that most of the things available are for older kids, not toddlers.)
